The Slate's new outline concept totally stands out. It is very short with a wide, parallel outline from nose to tail. Seen in surfing before, this shape style was introduced by JP as the first major brand in the SUP range. The windsurf versions followed soon.
The diamond nose and the swallow tail are the design features to draw your attention but it's the short, wide outline making this board special! With lots of lift the Slate provides a fast and lively ride paired with top acceleration. You would not expect so much upwind power and speed in a dedicated wave design.
Get used to its shortness, bear off knowing its sweet spot and the Slate will pop onto the plane and accelerate rapidly, feeling sharp and responsive underfoot. The boards create and maintain speed already on small waves helping to make marginal conditions very exciting!
The shortness is base for feeling small and compact in the air as well as for accelerated aerial rotations.
Additionally, shorter boards fit better into smaller waves with the shorter rail line enabling to smoothly carve tight into steep sections without getting stuck.
The flat V bottom flows into a deep single concave finishing off with a flat V at the tail. Consequently, the rail line has no flat section at all, making tight carves smooth. Changing from rail to rail happens super fast. The Slate powerfully accelerates through the bottom turn on small waves throwing tons of spray in the top turn. In thruster setup the Slate tracks well and carves with reliable grip. And this year, the boards come with a smaller tail fin and bigger side fins to enhance the grip and drive even more. The quad boxes allow to experiment with a 4 fin setup for more control and tighter turns.
Since 2004 the first JP PRO Edition boards have a (SUPER) LIMITED FINISH. By reducing the amount of paint (sanding off) the weight is decreased. Consequently, the boards have a custom look with certain "imperfections" in the paint, thus the material below might shine through. Sometimes they even look as if repaired. This is also true for the Full Wood Sandwich boards as they now feature a LIMITED FINISH, too. You won't find two boards exactly the same. We believe this is worth it as the weight reduction is substantial and there's no loss of durability or strength.
Store your board in mild (neither hot, nor cold; not exposed to sunlight), dry places ! Winter storage: non-freezing (constantly above +5 C).
Note: Avoid storage in closed, damp conditions like in a wet boardbag! So, after windsurfing and safe transport put the board out of its bag and let both dry separately - otherwise your board will suffer from osmosis and blisters (bubbles) will show up on the boards surface. And your bag might start to smell.
We highly recommend to open the air valve screw when the board is not used. Reason: Due to high pressure differences the sandwich construction suffers from high stress and can delaminate long term from the board's core. This will result in a soft spot and start absorbing water. Pressure differences are caused by high temperature variations or other pressure variations from e.g. aero planes. Do not forget to close the air vent before going on the water!
Damages caused by impacts are not covered under JP-Australia's limited warranty. Therefore, JP-Australia highly recommends the use of a nose protector.
Especially recommended for novices and everybody, who wants to protect the board nose.
The universal protector: Made of EVA, the UNI NOSE PROTECTOR is a very light yet strong protection. It is easy to handle as it is simply glued onto the nose.
The RADICAL THRUSTER QUADs, WAVE SLATEs and THRUSTER QUADs feature 5 fin boxes:
3 Slot Boxes with 2 covers and
2 side fin Mini Tuttle boxes with 2 covers
The boards are equipped with the fins which suit their character best. Still, you can acquire additional spare fins to trim the boards according your requirements or the given conditions. So, each board can be used in every possible setup: quad, thruster, twinser or even single-fin. To cover the same range of use, the main thruster- or the 2 twinser fins should be 2 cm bigger than the quad fins, and the single-fin should bigger again - minimum 2 but up to 5 cm.
Advantages of each setup:
SINGLE: "Drive", directional feel, good planing.
THRUSTER: The maneuverable version of the single fin setup with better control. The best on- to side-shore wave riding option overall.
QUAD: the best side-offshore down-the-line wave riding option overall
TWINSER: Livelier version to the quad setup.
