Materials & Technolgy

Our criteria for the best product rests on style, function, repairability, and durability. Among the most direct ways we can limit ecological impacts is with goods that last for generations or can be recycled.

Sometimes balancing the qualities of performance, durability and sustainability is one of the most difficult aspects. We strive to use as many sustainable materials as possible, but we trust our lives to this equipment, so we must value performance foremost.

No decision is taken lightly. When considering a material we evaluate its efficiency, functional qualities, chemical composition and the amount we’ll need before making a choice. To help us make a decision, we use the list of preferred materials and technologies below.

WETSUITS & WATERWEAR

WETSUITS

LIMESTONE NEOPRENE

We use earth mined limestone to replace petrochemicals in our neoprene. It comes from nature and has less environmental impact.

WETSUITS

ECO CARBON BLACK

Carbon black, one of the key ingredients of neoprene, can now be pyrolyzed from scrap rubber tires. This significantly reduces energy consumption and cuts CO2 emission by 200g per wetsuit.

WETSUITS

OYSTERSHELL POWDER

We use biocalcium oxide powder made from abandoned waste shells to partially replace limestone in the neoprene. This process recycles waste oyster shells and is part of our neoprene’s sustainability contribution. Oystershell Powder is used in all Select and Amp Level Wetsuits from SS24 onwards.

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

AQUA-ALPHA™ TECHNOLOGY

ION Wetsuits use the Aqua-α ™ technology. Aqua-α ™ is a solvent-free and completely water-based glue, which protects the health of workers at the factory as there is nearly no bad smell from the glue. The difference is huge - a good step for the people behind all the great wetsuits and the environment. Aqua-α ™ is used in all wetsuits.

WETSUITS

REYCLED MAX_FLEX

The pinnacle of our outside linings is now made from 100% recycled materials. In addition to its outstanding flexibility, it doesn't absorb water; instead, it disperses it through tiny channels. This enhances water evaporation and shortens drying time.
Used on all SS25 Amp level wetsuits.

RASHGUARDS & SHORTS

RECYCLED POLYESTER

A wide selection of our fabrics are knitted with polyester yarn made from recycled plastic bottles. This helps to reduce waste and material consumption at the same time.-> 45 plastic bottles for one wetsuit

USDA-CERTIFIED WITH 82% BIO-BASED CONTENT.

NATURAL RUBBER

Crafted from renewable materials like FSC certified natural rubber, oyster shell powder, and plant-based oil, OCENA® rubber is the most sustainable alternative to synthetic rubber. Thanks to modern technology, OCENA® maintains superior flex and durability. Used on our Amaze Amp Summerstyles.

TRAVELGEAR

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

WASTE2WEAR

Waste2Wear produces fabrics and textile products from recycled plastic bottles since 2008 with the objective of producing high- quality garments in a responsible way.

In cooperation with Waste2Wear we are able to manufacture the outer shell of all ION Boardbags and travelgear from recycled plastic bottles.

OUR COMMITMENT: 1% FOR THE PLANET

At ION, as part of Boards & More, we firmly believe that our passion for watersports and cycling is inseparable from our respect for nature. That’s why we decided to become members of "1% for the Planet". This coalition of businesses recognized that it’s time to actively contribute to preserving our environment. We see the need to question our business practices and understand that economic success is directly linked to the state of our Earth.

Through our commitment to "1% for the Planet", we reaffirm not only our goal of acting more sustainably but also our commitment to the values that shape our "Save our Playgrounds" program and our "Code of Conduct".

By donating 1% of our online turn over to environmental and social projects, we send a strong message about our commitment and invite our community to join us on this journey.

ION X CORAL GARDENERS

Supporting the reforestation of corals

ION co-operates with Coral Gardeners who is a global organization with operations across French Polynesia, Fiji, Thailand and soon more locations - set out to save the world’s coral reefs through active restoration efforts, led by science, powered by innovation, and amplified with community awareness and engagement.

We promote a lifestyle that is in harmony with nature. It is not only the playground we love but also the space where our values are rooted. The mountains, beaches, and waters must be preserved—not just for us, but for future generations.

We are proud to invest a portion of our resources into initiatives that make a significant impact. It’s the many small actions that eventually lead to great changes: together we can ride the waves of change and make a positive impact on our natural surroundings and social issues. Every little donation makes a valuable difference.

»CORAL REEFS ARE DYING AT AN ALARMING RATE«

As much as 50% have been lost in the past 30 years (UNEP) and the decline could reach up to 90% by 2050 according to the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report.

WHY REEFS MATTER

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea

They are the most biodiverse ecosystem on earth and are home to more than 25% of all marine life. More than 500 million people worldwide directly rely on the reef for food, income, costal protection and more.

Corals are going extinct, with nearly half already lost wordwide.

We have until 2050 to save what remains of this vital eco system

Coral Gardeners is an NGO on a vision

To save the world's coral reefs through active restoration, community engagement, innovation and science.

Biodiverse and abundant reefs equal a healthy ocean and healthy planet.

Through our 1% for the Planet committment, ION adopted 250 corals in Mo'ora, French Polynesia
